1969 AL Baltimore Orioles clinch the East! September 27th

The Baltimore Orioles defeated the New York Yankees today in extra innings 5-4. Combined with the Detroit Tigers 10-7 loss in Boston, Baltimore has won the AL East division! There are 4 games left in the regular season before the start of the playoffs between Baltimore and Minnesota. Home field advantage in the 5 game series is still to be determined. In other news today, the New York Mets lost and the Pittsburgh Pirates won their respective games.. Those 2 teams are now tied for 1st place in the NL East. The Chicago Cubs are 4 games behind the division leaders, so they still have an outside shot at the title.

The mighty Baltimore Orioles edged the New York Yankees in 12 innings at
Yankee Stadium by the score of 5 to 4.
 
The game was deadlocked at 4 after nine full innings.  Baltimore won the hard
fought contest in the 12th inning.  After an out was recorded, Dave Johnson
reached on an error.  Mark Belanger followed and he drew a walk.  Merv
Rettenmund then drew a walk to load the bases.  Paul Blair followed and he
hit a deep fly.  Baltimore totaled 10 hits on the afternoon.  
 
The win was credited to Dick Hall(9-6) who went 2 innings allowing no runs.
Eddie Watt recorded the save, his 20th.  John Cumberland(0-2) absorbed the
loss in relief.  It was a tough loss for him as he did not allow an earned
run in his 3 innings of work.

In a good matchup it was the Boston Red Sox 10, the Detroit Tigers 7 at Fenway
Park.
 
Jerry Moses enjoyed a fine day at the plate.  He doubled with all three
baserunners touching home in the 2nd inning, stroked a one-base hit in the
6th inning and cracked a two-run shot in the 8th inning.  Detroit threatened
in the 9th but Boston was able to put down the rally.  
 
Vicente Romo(8-8) got the win allowing 5 runs in 6 innings. Sparky Lyle was
credited with his 12th save.  The loss was charged to Denny McLain(22-9).  He
surrendered 6 runs and 10 hits in 7 innings.

NY at Was. September 10, 1969

After a long home run drought, Washington's Frank Howard hit 2 today while leading the Senators to a 10-0 pasteing of the New York Yankees. The 1st home run Howard hit was his 50th of the season, the first player to hit that plateau in the AL. His 4 rbi gives him 116 on the year, also tops in the AL.

Bal. at Det. September 7, 1969

The Detroit Tigers were able to prevent a series sweep by the Baltimore Orioles winning a close ballgame 2-1. Denny McLain went the distance for Detroit and got his 20th win of the season. A tight game, the score was 1-1 in the bottom of the 8th when Norm Cash hit one into the rightfield seats for the game winner. The Orioles took 3 of 4 games from the Tigers and leave town with a 5.5 game lead over 2nd place Detroit in the AL East.

Denny McLain tossed a complete game at Tiger Stadium where the Detroit Tigers








beat the Baltimore Orioles 2 to 1.








 








The deciding run was scored by Detroit in the bottom of the 8th.  After two








outs Norm Cash smashed a solo-shot out of the park.  Willie Horton stepped








into the batter's box and he ripped a single.  Baltimore had a chance in the








9th but they came up short.  








 








McLain(20-7) picked up the complete game victory, allowing 1 run. Dick








Hall(7-6) was given the loss in relief.  He surrendered 2 hits and no walks








in 2 innings.  








 








When questioned about the loss, Earl Weaver said, 'The fans got to see an








exciting game out there this afternoon.  Unfortunately, we couldn't get it








done this time.  Next time, though, we'll be the clubhouse with all the








smiles.'

1969 AL News: Oliva hits for the cycle

Minnesota's Tony Oliva became the 1st player in MLB to hit for the cycle this year in a game against the Cleveland Indians. Oliva also knocked in 5 runs, leading the Twins to a 12-5 victory over the Indians. Cleveland pitcher Sam McDowell (19-9) was thwarted in his bid to become the AL's 1st 20 game winner because of the hitting onslaught brought on by Oliva and the Twins.

Right fielder Tony Oliva hit for the cycle and had 5 RBI as the very strong


Minnesota Twins defeated the Cleveland Indians by a score of 12 to 5 at


Metropolitan Stadium.


 


Oliva was a one-man wrecking crew.  He tripled in the 3rd inning, launched a


three-run homer in the 5th inning, smacked a single in the 7th inning and


doubled bringing in two baserunners in the 8th inning.  Minnesota had 14 hits


for the game and Cleveland had 11.  


 


Dean Chance(3-2) went 6 and 2/3 innings allowing no runs for the victory. Sam


McDowell(19-9) was hit with the loss.  He allowed Minnesota 7 runs in 6


innings of work.  


 


'I've spent a lot of time in the cage and made some adjustments and they've


paid off,' Oliva said. 'I just take the same approach up there. I don't


overanalyze it. I go up there, see the ball and try to put a good swing on


it.'

Baltimore fans certainly got their money's worth at Memorial Stadium. Jim Palmer(5-1) pitched a rare no-hitter as the Baltimore Orioles toppled the Kansas City Royals 2 to 0. Palmer gave the home town fans an afternoon that they'll never forget. He walked 2 Kansas City batters and struck out 5. The tension started to build around the 6th inning. By the 9th inning the crowd was electrified. Baltimore rapped out 8 hits for the afternoon. Roger Nelson (2-5) absorbed the loss. He allowed 8 hits and 2 walks in 8 innings. 'What a show!' Earl Weaver said. 'Palmer was great out there -- I'm happy that he got it.'

Willie Horton connected with a 'big fly' and had 2 RBI as the Detroit Tigers bested the Baltimore Orioles 5 to 4 at Tiger Stadium. Detroit jumped on top of Baltimore in the bottom of the 6th inning scoring one runner. Baltimore threatened in the 9th but Detroit was able to put down the rally. Denny McLain(3-2) got credit for the victory, pitching 8 innings and allowing 3 runs. McLain got help from Don McMahon who earned his 3rd save. The losing pitcher was Jim Palmer(4-1). 'This was a tough loss,' said Earl Weaver, 'the kind that sticks with you for awhile.'

I've been unable to blog my 1969 replay recently because of issues with SOM V16 and blogger.com. Hopefully the problem will be resolved soon. Trying a round about way here to give an update: The Baltimore Orioles have been on a hot streak lately and have won 11 games in a row. The Detroit Tigers are in second place 5.5 games behind.

complete game as the Kansas City Royals topped the Minnesota Twins by a score
of 8 to 3 at Municipal Stadium.
 
Bunker(1-0) earned his pay with a solid performance for Kansas City.  He went
9 innings allowing 13 hits and 1 walk.  Both teams finished the game with 13
hits.  
 
Tom Hall(0-1) was the losing pitcher.  Kansas City scored big getting 8 runs
off him in 5 and 2/3 innings.

The Detroit Tigers and the Cleveland Indians locked up in an exciting one-run
game at Tiger Stadium.  The final score was the Detroit Tigers 10, the
Cleveland Indians 9 in 10 innings.
 
The game was deadlocked at 9 after nine full innings.  Detroit came out on top
in the 10th inning.  After an out was recorded, Gates Brown lofted a
solo-blast 'downtown' making Detroit the victors to the delight of the home
town faithful.  Cleveland had 15 hits in the game while Detroit had 8, but
Detroit had the more timely hits.  
 
John Hiller(1-0) was the winner allowing no runs in 2 and 1/3 innings. Horacio
Pina(0-1) took the loss in relief.  He allowed 1 hit and no walks in 2 and
1/3 innings.

Memorial Stadium as the Baltimore Orioles beat the Boston Red Sox 8 to

Dave McNally(1-0) delivered a fine performance for Baltimore.  He was reached
for 9 hits and 4 walks in 6 and 2/3 innings.  Baltimore finished with 10 hits
in the victory.  
 
Pete Richert preserved the game for McNally, recording his his 1st.  Jim
Lonborg(0-1) was given the loss.  He gave up 4 runs in 3 innings of work.

Reggie Jackson launched 2 homeruns as the Oakland Athletics topped the Chicago
White Sox by a score of 5 to 1 at Oakland Coliseum.
 
Oakland jumped on top to stay in the 3rd inning scoring one runner using 2
hits.  For the game Oakland out-hit Chicago 10 to 7.  
 
The victory was credited to Blue Moon Odom(1-0) who went 7 and 1/3 innings,
allowing 1 run. Odom got relief help from Lew Krausse who gained credit for
his 1st save.  Gary Peters(0-1) was the loser.

Jim McGlothlin had an impressive outing and Jay Johnstone had 2 base hits and
2 RBI at Anaheim Stadium as the California Angels beat the Seattle Pilots by
the count of 5 to 1.
 
McGlothlin(1-0) was very good in the win.  He gave up just 2 hits and 2 walks
in 7 innings.  California had 10 hits overall, while Seattle had 3.  
 
Hoyt Wilhelm was credited with his 1st save.  The losing pitcher was Marty
Pattin(0-1).  He allowed 2 runs and 7 hits in 6 innings.

1969 AL season opener: NY at Was.

April 7, 1969 The 1969 AL season opened in Washighton today and the hometown Senators defeated the New York Yankees in dramtic fashion. Washington 1st baseman Mike Epstein hit a 2-run homerun in the bottom of the 9th to win the game for the Senators 5-4. It was Epstein's 2nd hr of the game.
