New York Mets win 1969 National League Championship!

October 7, 1969

The New York Mets did it! They won game 3 of the NLCS by the score of 4-3 and completed the sweep against the Atlanta Braves. Both teams scored 3 runs in the 4th inning before New York got the winning run in the bottom of the 7th. Don Clendenon, pinch hitting for starting pitcher Gary Gentry, hit a solo homerun into the leftfield seats. Nolan Ryan came in to pitch the final 2 innings and preserve the win. The Mets pitching was the story of this series. They held the hard hitting Braves to 5 runs while New York scored just enough to win all 3 games. The New York Mets are the 1969 National League Champs!

1969 NLCS Game 2

October 5, 1969

Once again the New York Mets pitching quieted the Atlanta Braves bats while taking game 2 of the NLCS 4-1. Tom Seaver worked his magic for the Mets, going 8 innings, allowing 5 hits and striking out 6 in the victory. Ron Taylor pitched the 9th and picked up his 1st save of the post season. Mets 2nd baseman Ken Boswell went 2 for 3 and his triple in the 5th plated 2 runs.
The best of 5 series now shifts to New York for the next 2 games. Atlanta's backs are to the wall and the Mets only need to take 1 more to end this series. Gary Gentry is scheduled to start for New York and Pat Jarvis will go for the Braves.

1969 NL Atlanta Braves Final Regular Season Player Stats

The NL West division winners, the Atlanta Braves, will face the New York Mets in the 1st ever 5 game NL Championship Series. The Braves bring a lot of fire-power into the series led by rightfielder Hank Aaron who is sure to win NL MVP honors this season. Aaron led the NL this year in HR with 55 and RBI-134. He also finished 3rd in BA-.346, just missing the Triple Crown with his outstanding season. Outfielder Rico Carty put up very impressive numbers: .364, 21, 70 in 106 games. 3rd baseman Clete Boyer, besides being an excellent defensive player, is always a threat at the plate: .285, 17, 68. Orlando Cepeda had an off year with a .227 BA but still managed to hit 20 HR and 90 RBI.
The pitching staff includes 21 game winner Ron Reed 2.43 ERA, Phil Niekro 17-11 2.50 ERA, Pat Jarvis 18-9 3.03 ERA, and bullpen workhorse Cecil Upshaw who saved 27 games in his 115 IP. The Braves were 9-3 versus the Mets during the regular season and seem to have the best chance to come out on top in the NLCS.
