1969 AL News Recap and League Leaders as of September 1st

There's a few surprise names among AL league leaders as the calendar turns to September. The Washington Senators under new manager Ted Williams are providing a couple of them. Eddie Brinkman has been in the top 10 Batting Average leaders all season long and currently sits 3rd with a .319 average. Mike Epstein went on a tear in August and now leads the AL in hitting at .325. Epstein also has 35 homeruns, 4th in the league. Frank Howard is having a triple crown type season: 1st in HR with 49, tied for 1st with 110 RBI and 5th in BA at .313. Williams is obviously having a big impact on the Senators hitting this year.
Other players in the AL having very productive seasons are Harmon Killebrew (Min), Reggie Jackson (Oak), Carl Yasstrzemski (Bsn), and Tony Oliva (Min).
On the pitching front, Sam McDowell (Clev) and Mike Cuellar (Bal) are on the verge of becoming the AL's first 20 game winner. Denny McLain (Det) is following up on his epic 1968 season with another fine year. Blue Moon Odom (Oak) started the season 10-0, has since cooled off a little, but still has put up 15 wins to go along with a league best 1.83 ERA.

1969 AL Recap - May 24, 1969

Standings and League Leaders for the AL as of 5/24/69.
The Baltimore Orioles continue to lead the AL East but have been in a bit of a tailspin lately, losing their last 6 in a row. Their latest loss came at the hands of the Oakland A's and Blue Moon Odom who picked up his major league leading 9th straight win. Oakland is still 1st in the AL West but the Minnesota Twins have been gaining ground.
The Washington Senators, managed by Ted Williams, have been the surprise team in the league so far this season. Frank Howard, .350, 16, 45, has been destroying the ball this year and slick fielding (ss) Eddie Brinkman looks to have finally found his batting stroke hitting .363, 2nd in the AL behind Roy White of the NY Yankees.
