This blog started in 2011 with my attempt to manage the 1969 Detroit Tigers to an AL Championship. Just finished my 1987 asplayed replay (using SOM Baseball 2013 with the cards). As always I managed the Detroit Tigers and succeeded in winning the World Series. 1987 was put on hold while I 'played along' with the 2013 MLB season, so it took over a year to complete. Bal. at Det. September 5, 1969

Mike Cuellar and the Baltimore Orioles defeated the Detroit

Tigers 5-0 in game 2 of this 4 game series between the top 2 teams in the AL East. Cuellar threw a 3-hit shutout and became the 1st pitcher in the AL to win 20 games this season. Oriole centerfielder Paul Blair had a fine day at the plate going 3 for 5 and driving in 4 runs. Baltimore now leads Detroit by 5.5 games.

Mike Cuellar threw a 3 hit shutout at Tiger Stadium as the Baltimore Orioles


beat the Detroit Tigers by the count of 5 to 0.


 


Paul Blair enjoyed a fine evening at the plate.  He ripped a single in the 1st


inning, belted a three-run homer in the 2nd inning and hit a one-base hit


which brought home a run in the 6th inning.  Baltimore had 8 hits for the


night.  


 


For Cuellar(20-6) it was his 2nd shutout this year. Mike Kilkenny(10-5) ended


up with the loss.  He gave up 4 runs and 6 hits in 4 innings.

Bal. at Det. September 4, 1969

The Baltimore Orioles came into Detroit for a big 4 game

series against the 2nd place Tigers, flexed their muscles and won the 1st game 8-3. The Robinson's hit a pair of 2-run homers in the 1st inning off Detroit starter Earl Wilson and the Orioles sailed on to an easy victory. Boog Powell hit a 2-run blast in the 3rd, his 30th of the year and Frank Robinson added another homerun in the 5th allowing Tom Phoebus to pick up his 14th win of the season.

Frank Robinson rocketed 2 homeruns and had 3 RBI as the phenomenal Baltimore


Orioles topped the Detroit Tigers by a score of 8 to 3 at Tiger


Stadium.


 


Robinson had a big day with his bat.  He popped a two-run clout over the fence


in the 1st inning and hit a bases-empty home run in the 5th inning.


Baltimore managed 9 hits in their victory.  


 


The win went to Tom Phoebus(14-7) who allowed 2 runs in 6 and 1/3 innings.


Earl Wilson(14-13) suffered the loss.  He allowed 3 homeruns in 3 innings of


work.

Det. at KC September 3, 1969

The Detroit Tigers put on a devastating offensive display in Kansas City tonight, banging out 22 hits on the way to defeating the Royals 15-6. Tiger starter Denny McLain had one of his poorer outings of the season but his teamates run support allowed him to pick up his 19th win.
Detroit heads home for a big 4 game series against the 1st place Baltimore Orioles starting tomorrow night. The Tigers now trail the Birds by 3.5 games so this series looms large.

Jim Northrup launched 2 homeruns and had 3 RBI as the dominant Detroit Tigers
defeated the Kansas City Royals by a score of 15 to 6 at Municipal
Stadium.
 
Northrup was a seemingly constant irritant to the hometown fans as he provided
much of the offense for the visitors.  He lofted a solo-blast 'downtown' in
the 6th inning and popped a two-run clout over the fence in the 9th inning.
Detroit provided plenty of action in the 6th inning which saw them score 8
runs on 7 hits and the 9th inning when they had 4 runs on 5 hits.  Detroit
ended up with 22 hits for the game while Kansas City had 9.  
 
Denny McLain(19-7) picked up the victory, allowing 6 runs in 7 innings. Mike
Hedlund(4-7) took the loss.  He was knocked around, surrendering 6 runs in 5
innings.

1969 AL News: Oliva hits for the cycle

Minnesota's Tony Oliva became the 1st player in MLB to hit for the cycle this year in a game

against the Cleveland Indians. Oliva also knocked in 5 runs, leading the Twins to a 12-5 victory over the Indians. Cleveland pitcher Sam McDowell (19-9) was thwarted in his bid to become the AL's 1st 20 game winner because of the hitting onslaught brought on by Oliva and the Twins.

Right fielder Tony Oliva hit for the cycle and had 5 RBI as the very strong


Minnesota Twins defeated the Cleveland Indians by a score of 12 to 5 at


Metropolitan Stadium.


 


Oliva was a one-man wrecking crew.  He tripled in the 3rd inning, launched a


three-run homer in the 5th inning, smacked a single in the 7th inning and


doubled bringing in two baserunners in the 8th inning.  Minnesota had 14 hits


for the game and Cleveland had 11.  


 


Dean Chance(3-2) went 6 and 2/3 innings allowing no runs for the victory. Sam


McDowell(19-9) was hit with the loss.  He allowed Minnesota 7 runs in 6


innings of work.  


 


'I've spent a lot of time in the cage and made some adjustments and they've


paid off,' Oliva said. 'I just take the same approach up there. I don't


overanalyze it. I go up there, see the ball and try to put a good swing on


it.'
