1969 ALCS Game 2

October 5, 1969

The Baltimore Orioles came from behind to defeat the Minnesota Twins 4-3 and take a commanding 2-0 lead in this 5 game ALCS. Baltimore trailed 3-2 in the 7th inning when they scored 2 runs off the Twins starter Jim Perry. With 2 outs, pinch hitter Dave May singled in the tieing run. Then Perry threw a wild pitch that allowed what proved to be the winning run to score. Baltimore starter Dave McNally got the win but was not at his sharpest early on. He only gave up 3 hits but walked 5, and a defensive lapse allowed a run to score. Pete Richert came on in the 9th to hold off a Twins threat and picked up his 1st save.
The teams head to Minnesota for the next 2 scheduled games, but Baltimore can finish off this series with just 1 more win. Jim Kaat will start the next game for the Twins while the Orioles counter with Jim Palmer.

1969 NLCS Game 2

October 5, 1969

Once again the New York Mets pitching quieted the Atlanta Braves bats while taking game 2 of the NLCS 4-1. Tom Seaver worked his magic for the Mets, going 8 innings, allowing 5 hits and striking out 6 in the victory. Ron Taylor pitched the 9th and picked up his 1st save of the post season. Mets 2nd baseman Ken Boswell went 2 for 3 and his triple in the 5th plated 2 runs.
The best of 5 series now shifts to New York for the next 2 games. Atlanta's backs are to the wall and the Mets only need to take 1 more to end this series. Gary Gentry is scheduled to start for New York and Pat Jarvis will go for the Braves.

1969 ALCS Game 1

October 4, 1969

The Baltimore Orioles won a close contest 3-1 against the Minnesota Twins in game 1 of the ALCS. Oriole starter Mike Cuellar pitched a beauty of a game until the 9th inning when the Twins put runners on 2nd and 3rd with 1 out. Eddie Watt came on in relief of Cuellar and struck out both Minnesota pinch-hitters, preserving the win for Baltimore. Oriole shortstop Mark Belanger (pictured) had a nice day at the plate going 3 for 3 and driving in 2 runs. Game 2 tomorrow will feature Baltimore's Dave McNally taking on Jim Perry and the Twins.

WEB GEMS- Top 8th: Felix Millan robbed Ron Swoboda of a base hit.

Jerry Koosman went 9 strong innings as the New York Mets defeated the Atlanta

Braves by a score of 2 to 1 at Fulton Co. Stadium.

The game was won by New York when they scored a run in the 9th inning. After

two outs Tommie Agee drew a walk. Bud Harrelson was next and he ripped a

base-hit. Cleon Jones then doubled. Art Shamsky followed and he was walked

intentionally to load the bases. Ron Swoboda got his turn next, but he was a

strikeout victim. New York banged out 10 hits on the afternoon.

Koosman(1-0) got the victory, allowing 1 run for the game. Paul Doyle(0-1) was

given the loss in relief. 'I've been working on a few things in my delivery,

and I think I'm hitting a good groove.' Koosman said after the game. 'I'm

ready to start another game tomorrow!'
