The Detroit Tigers arrived in the nations capital for the start of a big 4 game series against the Washington Senators minus their 2nd baseman Dick McAuliffe. It was learned late Sunday night that McAuliffe injured his knee sometime during that days doubleheader vs. the Cleveland Indians. It is feared that surgery may be necessary for the man considered by many to be the sparkplug of the team. Manager Mayo Smith said recently called up rookie infielder Ike Brown will take over at 2nd base for now until the full extent of McAuliffe's injury is determined.
The Tigers have fallen back to 2nd place, 3 games behind the Baltimore Orioles and only 2 games ahead of the much improved 3rd place Senators.
