October 12, 1969

In a dramatic ending to game 2 of the World Series, Baltimore's Brooks Robinson (pictured) hit a 2-run homerun in the bottom of the 10th inning, giving the Orioles a 3-1 victory over the New York Mets. The Mets Tom Seaver went 9 innings giving up 1 unearned run before being lifted for a pinchhitter in the 10th. Tug McGraw came on in relief and gave up a double to Frank Robinson before Brooks hit the game winning homer. Baltimore's Dave McNally went the first 6 innings and gave up New Yorks only run. Dick Hall pitched 3 shutout innings before turning the game over to Tom Phoebus in the 10th. Phoebus ended up with the win.
The teams now head to New York with Baltimore holding a 2-0 series lead. Gary Gentry will start Game 3 for the Mets and Jim Palmer gets the nod for the Orioles.

1969 World Series Game 1

October 11, 1969

In game 1 of the 1969 World Series the Baltimore Orioles defeated the New York Mets 8-6 in a very exciting ballgame. Both clubs had their aces on the mound for what was expected to be a close, low scoring matchup. That didn't happen. The Mets got 3 runs off Cuellar in the 4th, keyed by Ron Swoboda's 2 run homer and 3 more runs in the 6th. But Baltimore struck back in the bottom of the 6th with 4 runs off Koosman. Frank Robinson's 2 run blast was the big hit for the O's.
Koosman was lifted for a pinch hitter in the top of the 7th and Nolan Ryan replaced him to hold the lead in the bottom of the 7th. Baltimore had other ideas though. They chased Ryan after only 1 out and the bases loaded. Before the inning was over, the Orioles had scored 3 runs and taken a 7-6 lead. Davey Johnson's (pictured) single was the cluth hit that drove in 2 runs. Baltimore added an insurance run in the 8th and Eddie Watt came on in relief in the 9th to get the save.
So the Orioles go 1 up in the series and will be sending Dave McNally to the hill to start tomorrows game. Tom Seaver will start for New York.

1969 World Series Preview

October 8, 1969

The NL Champion New York Mets will play the AL Champion Baltimore Orioles in the 1969 World Series. The best of 7 series will start at Baltimore's Memorial Stadium on October 11. Because both teams swept their league championship series they'll have 3 days rest before game 1. New York has named Jerry Koosman their game 1 starter and Baltimore will send Mike Cuellar to the mound. The Orioles are heavy favorites in the series.

Baltimore Orioles win 1969 American League Championship Series!

October 7, 1969

The Baltimore Orioles completed the sweep over the Minnesota Twins with a 10-7 victory in game 3 of the ALCS. The Orioles jumped all over Twins starter Jim Kaat for 6 runs and before the 2nd inning was over, Kaat was gone. Minnesota battled back and even had the tieing run at the plate in the bottom of the 9th, but they weren't able to overcome the big lead Baltimore had established. Leftfielder Don Buford had 5 hits in the game and Frank Robinson (pictured) hit a 3 run homer to lead the Oriole's attack. Jim Palmer got the win even though he was far from his best. Pete Richert notched the save, his 2nd of the series.
The Baltimore Orioles are the American League Champions!

New York Mets win 1969 National League Championship!

October 7, 1969

The New York Mets did it! They won game 3 of the NLCS by the score of 4-3 and completed the sweep against the Atlanta Braves. Both teams scored 3 runs in the 4th inning before New York got the winning run in the bottom of the 7th. Don Clendenon, pinch hitting for starting pitcher Gary Gentry, hit a solo homerun into the leftfield seats. Nolan Ryan came in to pitch the final 2 innings and preserve the win. The Mets pitching was the story of this series. They held the hard hitting Braves to 5 runs while New York scored just enough to win all 3 games. The New York Mets are the 1969 National League Champs!
