1987 AL News Recap

The month of April is in the books for the AL. The Toronto Blue Jays have gotten off to a fast start and lead the AL East while Minnesota, Seattle and California are bunched up on top of the Western Division. My Tigers are right behind the Blue Jays, tied for 2nd with the Milwaukee Brewers.
Detroit's Alan Trammell leads the AL in hitting with a .443 BA, but Boston's Wade Boggs has been the most impressive hitter so far this season. He's 2nd in BA with a .395 mark, tied for 1st in HR with 8, and tied for 1st with 26 RBI. Toronto's George Bell is also putting up some good stats: .385, 8, 26. Texas pitcher Charlie Hough leads all pitchers with a 5-0 record to go along with a league leading 1.30 ERA.
Detroit rookie Matt Nokes has been a pleasant surprise for the Tigers. The young catcher has taken over for departed free agent All Star Lance Parrish much better than expected and put up some very good numbers so far: .371, 6, 12.

1987 NL Newspaper Recap

May 1, 1987

The 1987 NL season has finished the month of April. Last years World Series Champion New York Mets lead the East but all the other teams in the division, excluding Montreal, are right in the mix. The Cinncinati Reds have a slim lead over 2nd place LA in the West.
The ball has been flying out of the ballpark this year. The Reds' Eric Davis has hit 10 homers and there's many others who've hit 7 or more in the 1st month of the season. Davis' teammate, Kal Daniels, has put up some impressive numbers: .382, 9, 20 while St. Louis Cardinal Jack Clark may be off to the best start of all: .429, 8, 23.

Alan Trammell rocketed 3 homeruns and had 8 RBI at Anaheim Stadium where the
Detroit Tigers beat the California Angels by the score of 10 to 5.

Trammell provided much of the offense. He lofted a three-run 'big-fly' in the
1st inning, cleared the fences for a two-run home run in the 2nd inning, hit
a bases-empty home run in the 4th inning and doubled bringing home two
baserunners in the 6th inning. Detroit finished with 13 hits while
California ended up with 5.

Dan Petry(3-1) got the win allowing 4 runs in 8 innings. Don Sutton(3-1) was
charged with the loss. He surrended 4 homeruns in his 2 innings.

'I had good swings tonight,' Trammell said, 'Everything felt right'.
