1969 AL Standings as of September 1st

Sept. 1, 1969

The historic 1969 MLB season is headed into the home stretch. September has arrived and baseball's 1st season that will produce 2 division winners in each league is getting closer to the finish. The Minnesota Twins are running away with the AL West and are the only team playing above .500 in the division.
My Detroit Tigers had a good month of August (19-11) but actually fell further behind the AL East division leading Baltimore Orioles. Detroit is 4.5 games back. Baltimore went 20-11 in August and their 84-50 record is the best in MLB this season. The Washington Senators continue to surprise eveyone in the league with their good play.
The Orioles are 7 games off their actual '69 record and the Tigers are 1 game better than their actual record. That fact has given me some hope in catching Baltimore but it's been a bit discouraging lately. Detroit can't seem to gain any ground. Have to regroup for the final push, only 31 games left.

1969 AL News Recap and League Leaders as of September 1st

There's a few surprise names among AL league leaders as the calendar turns to September. The Washington Senators under new manager Ted Williams are providing a couple of them. Eddie Brinkman has been in the top 10 Batting Average leaders all season long and currently sits 3rd with a .319 average. Mike Epstein went on a tear in August and now leads the AL in hitting at .325. Epstein also has 35 homeruns, 4th in the league. Frank Howard is having a triple crown type season: 1st in HR with 49, tied for 1st with 110 RBI and 5th in BA at .313. Williams is obviously having a big impact on the Senators hitting this year.
Other players in the AL having very productive seasons are Harmon Killebrew (Min), Reggie Jackson (Oak), Carl Yasstrzemski (Bsn), and Tony Oliva (Min).
On the pitching front, Sam McDowell (Clev) and Mike Cuellar (Bal) are on the verge of becoming the AL's first 20 game winner. Denny McLain (Det) is following up on his epic 1968 season with another fine year. Blue Moon Odom (Oak) started the season 10-0, has since cooled off a little, but still has put up 15 wins to go along with a league best 1.83 ERA.

1969 NL Standings as of September 1st

Sept. 1, 1969

The NL season turns to the month of September and the Atlanta Braves continue to hold a comfortable lead in the NL West. The Braves posted the best record during August (20-9) and have an 8 game lead over 2nd place San Francisco.
The Pittsburgh Pirates had a solid month in August (18-9) to keep the top spot in the NL East. The Chicago Cubs had another sub-.500 month and are now 5.5 games behind Pittsburgh. The New York Mets tried to make a charge in August (20-11) but while they had a good month, they weren't able to gain any ground on the Pirates.
