May 28, 1969 Detroit at Oakland

The Detroit Tigers were unable to solve A's starting pitcher Blue Moon Odom and lost game 2 of this 3 game series against Oakland 3-1. But then again, nobody has been able to solve Odom this year. He got his 10th straight win of the season and is now 10-0 in 10 starts with 8 complete games. His era stands at 1.64. Right fielder Reggie Jackson hit a 2-run homer in the 1st off Tiger starter Earl Wilson and that would prove to be all the Athletics would need to defeat Detroit. Denny McLain will face off against Jim 'Catfish' Hunter in tomorrow afternoon's rubber game of the series.

Blue Moon Odom had a complete game as the Oakland Athletics outscored the
Detroit Tigers 3 to 1.

Oakland set the tone of the game in the first inning scoring 2 runs on 2 hits.
Campy Campaneris led off and started the rally when he lashed a single.
Mike Hershberger came to the plate and laid down a sacrifice bunt. Reggie
Jackson then lifted one out of the park for a two run home run. One out
later, Danny Cater got his turn next, but he was a strikeout victim. That
early scoring was all that Odom(10-0) needed. Oakland finished with 7 hits
in the victory.

The loss was charged to Earl Wilson(5-4). He pitched 6 innings allowing 6
hits and 2 walks.

Detroit Tigers beat the Oakland Athletics by the score of 8 to
4.

Lolich(5-1) had a strong outing. He allowed just 4 hits and 2 walks in 9
innings and surrendered 2 'round-trippers'. Detroit rapped out 11 hits for
the night.

Chuck Dobson(4-3) absorbed the loss. He saw his ERA jump from 3.13 to 3.68 as
gave up 5 runs in 2 and 2/3 innings. Hank Bauer was impressed with Lolich
and his 10 strikeouts. 'It's tough to generate runs if you can't make
contact with the ball.'

1969 AL Recap - May 24, 1969

Standings and League Leaders for the AL as of 5/24/69.
The Baltimore Orioles continue to lead the AL East but have been in a bit of a tailspin lately, losing their last 6 in a row. Their latest loss came at the hands of the Oakland A's and Blue Moon Odom who picked up his major league leading 9th straight win. Oakland is still 1st in the AL West but the Minnesota Twins have been gaining ground.
The Washington Senators, managed by Ted Williams, have been the surprise team in the league so far this season. Frank Howard, .350, 16, 45, has been destroying the ball this year and slick fielding (ss) Eddie Brinkman looks to have finally found his batting stroke hitting .363, 2nd in the AL behind Roy White of the NY Yankees.
