Baltimore Orioles win 1969 World Series!

Octobers 16, 1969

The Baltimore Orioles are MLB's 1969 World Champions! The Orioles defeated the New York Mets 10-4 and won the World Series 4 games to 1. The combination of Baltimore power and New York fielding misques were just too much for the Mets to overcome. Paul Blair hit 2 homeruns and Dave May added a key, pinch hit, 3 run homer to lead the Oriole hitting attack. 4 New York errors led to 5 unearned runs scored against them.
The Mets kept coming back in the early innings but May's homerun in the 6th was the final blow. The Orioles Tom Phoebus threw 3 shutout innings of relief, allowing starter Dave McNally to get the win despite a poor pitching performance.
Baltimore 3rd baseman Brooks Robinson was named the Series MVP. In 23 PA he hit .500 with 2 HR and 6 RBI.

1969 World Series Game 4

October 15, 1969

In danger of being swept in the World Series, the New York Mets won a dramtic 11 inning game against the Baltimore Orioles 5-4. The Mets trailed 3-1 going into the bottom of the 9th inning when the drama began. Ed Kranepool (pictured) pinch hit for Donn Clendenon and hit a 1 out, 2 run homerun to send the game into extra innings. Baltimore scored a run in the top of the 10th but New York battled back to score a run and tie it up again in the bottom of the inning. After holding the Orioles scoreless in the top of the 11th, the Mets Wayne Garrett batted with 2 outs and doubled home Kranepool with the game winning run. The fans went wild in New York and the Mets have new life in this series. Tom Seaver will start for New York tomorrow and Dave McNally gets the start for Baltimore.

WEB GEMS- Top 8th: Jerry Grote blocked the plate, saving a run!

50,494 fans were treated to a fine game at Shea Stadium as only one run

separated the combatants at game's end. The New York Mets won by the

slimmest of margins, 5 to 4.

Both teams had scored 3 runs after nine full innings. Finally, New York

prevailed in the 11th inning. After an out was recorded, Ed Kranepool

doubled. One out later, Jerry Grote stepped up to the plate and he was

walked intentionally. Wayne Garrett then doubled resulting in an exciting

win for New York and a wild post-game celebration by the home town fans.

Both teams finished the game with 9 hits.

The victory went to Tug McGraw(1-1) who went 1 inning, allowing no runs. Dick

Hall(0-1) was the loser in relief. He pitched 2/3 of an inning giving up 2

hits and 1 walk.

1969 World Series Game 3

October 14, 1969

Jim Palmer carried a no-hitter into the 8th inning and Brooks Robinson hit a 2-run homer in the 1st, leading the Baltimore Orioles to a 3-1 victory over the New York Mets in Game 3 of the World Series. Palmer was untouchable until 2 outs in the 8th inning when Tommy Agee doubled. The Mets threatened in the 9th, scoring 1 run, but Palmer got the doubleplay groundball he needed to end the game.
Baltimore now leads the series 3 games to none and a victory in tomorrows game would make them the Champions of MLB. Mike Cuellar will start for Baltimore and Jerry Koosman goes for New York.
