Jim Clancy carried a no-hitter into the 8th inning and George Bell rocketed 3
homeruns and had 6 RBI as the Toronto Blue Jays ballclub embarrassed the
Minnesota Twins by the count of 14 to 0.
Bell was in a groove all evening. The Minnesota fans hated to see him
approaching the batter's box. He smashed a two-run homer in the 1st inning,
clubbed a three-run home run in the 5th inning and smashed a bases-empty
'big-fly' in the 9th inning. Toronto simply wore out the Minnesota pitching
staff, scoring in 6 different innings.
Clancy(5-1) went the distance for the shutout. The right-handed Clancy lost
his no-hit bid when Roy Smalley singled with one out in the 8th inning. Mark
Portugal(1-3) took the loss. He surrended 4 homeruns in his 2 and 1/3
innings.
'They made a couple of mistakes and I took full advantage,' Bell said 'next
time I'm sure they'll pitch me tougher.'
