This blog started in 2011 with my attempt to manage the 1969 Detroit Tigers to an AL Championship. Just finished my 1987 asplayed replay (using SOM Baseball 2013 with the cards). As always I managed the Detroit Tigers and succeeded in winning the World Series. 1987 was put on hold while I 'played along' with the 2013 MLB season, so it took over a year to complete. Bal. at Det. September 7, 1969

The Detroit Tigers were able to prevent a series sweep by the Baltimore Orioles winning a close

ballgame 2-1. Denny McLain went the distance for Detroit and got his 20th win of the season. A tight game, the score was 1-1 in the bottom of the 8th when Norm Cash hit one into the rightfield seats for the game winner. The Orioles took 3 of 4 games from the Tigers and leave town with a 5.5 game lead over 2nd place Detroit in the AL East.

Denny McLain tossed a complete game at Tiger Stadium where the Detroit Tigers








beat the Baltimore Orioles 2 to 1.








 








The deciding run was scored by Detroit in the bottom of the 8th.  After two








outs Norm Cash smashed a solo-shot out of the park.  Willie Horton stepped








into the batter's box and he ripped a single.  Baltimore had a chance in the








9th but they came up short.  








 








McLain(20-7) picked up the complete game victory, allowing 1 run. Dick








Hall(7-6) was given the loss in relief.  He surrendered 2 hits and no walks








in 2 innings.  








 








When questioned about the loss, Earl Weaver said, 'The fans got to see an








exciting game out there this afternoon.  Unfortunately, we couldn't get it








done this time.  Next time, though, we'll be the clubhouse with all the








smiles.'

Phi. at NY September 7, 1969

The New Mets have really been on a roll lately and won their 8th consecutive game tonight, 9-1 against the Philadelphia Phillies. The Mets have gone 15-2 in their last 17 games and now trail the NL East leading Pittsburgh Pirates by only 2 games.

Donn Clendenon slammed a homerun and had 2 RBI and Gary Gentry pitched 9
strong innings as the seemingly unstoppable New York Mets topped the slumping
Philadelphia Phillies by a score of 9 to 1 at Shea Stadium.
 
Gentry(11-10) dominated Philadelphia hitters.  He allowed only 5 hits and no
walks in 9 innings.  New York rapped out 15 hits for the afternoon.  
 
Bill Champion(6-7) was the loser.  He was hit hard and gave up 11 hits and 3
walks in 6 and 2/3 innings.  'I thought it was my best performance in a long
time,' said Gentry. 'I had good command early in the game. I had my control
and composure and everything went well.'

The Baltimore Orioles crushed the Detroit Tigers tonight 14-4 while winning their 3rd straight of this 4 game series. The Orioles jumped all over Tiger starter Mickey Lolich in the 1st inning and before it was over they'd pushed 8 runs across the plate. Jim Palmer went the distance for the Orioles and picked up his 14th win of the season. Baltimore increased their division lead over Detroit to 6.5 games with the victory.

Jim Palmer mowed down 10 Detroit batters and Andy Etchebarren had 3 base hits
and 3 RBI as the Detroit Tigers were badly beaten by the Baltimore Orioles,
14 to 4.
 
Palmer(12-4) gave Baltimore a solid outing.  He went 9 innings surrendering 9
hits and 3 walks.  Baltimore banged out 11 hits on the night.  
 
Mickey Lolich(14-9) was the loser.  'I had my good stuff tonight.' Palmer
said. 'As the game went along I started to get the feeling that I was going
to strike out a bunch of hitters.'

Atl. at Cin. September 6, 1969

Hank Aaron of the Atlanta Braves became the 1st player in the NL to reach the 50 home run

mark this season when he hit a 2 run bomb in the 7th inning in a game against the Cinncinati Reds. Despite hitting the homerun in a losing effort the 2 RBI gives him 116 on the year, tops in MLB.

23,033 fans were treated to a fine game at Crosley Field as only one run


separated the combatants at game's end.  The Cincinnati Reds won by the


slimmest of margins, 5 to 4.


 


Cincinnati drew first blood jumping out to an early lead in the first inning


plating an isolated run.  Gary Nolan(3-2) got help from Jack Fisher who


pitched a perfect ninth and was credited with his 3rd save.  


 


Pat Jarvis(16-9) suffered the loss.  He allowed 3 homeruns in 6 innings of


work.  Cincinnati now has a record of 70-64.  With the loss, Atlanta has a


record of 5-5 lately, 84-55 overall.
