In a great finish the Detroit Tigers came back in the top of the ninth and
held on to win over the Baltimore Orioles by a score of 4 to 1 at Memorial
Stadium.
Detroit had the winning rally in the 9th inning when they came up with 4 runs
on 2 hits. The big moment was provided by Ike Brown who silenced the stadium
when he cleared the fences for a two-run home run. Detroit had only 5 hits
for the afternoon.
The win went to Fred Lasher(2-3) who allowed no runs in 1 inning. Don McMahon
preserved the game for Lasher, recording his his 8th. Mike Cuellar(9-4) was
the loser. It was a tough loss for him as he did not allow an earned run in
his 8 and 1/3 innings of work.
After the game, it took a long while before Earl Weaver emerged from his
office. In a subdued tone he answered only a couple of questions. He
concluded with, 'Fellows, sorry I'm not in a very talkative mood this
afternoon, as I think you'll understand. I'm sure you'll find the banter a
lot more light-hearted over in the Detroit locker room.'
