July 9, 1969 Cleveland at Washington

Frank Howard of the Washington Senators is showing no sign of slowing his assault on AL pitching. He hit 2 more homers today and drove in 4 runs, leading his team to an impressive 13-3 win over the Cleveland Indians. Howard has now hit 11 hr's this month and we're not even half-way through it! He has 38 on the year which puts him on a pace to hit 69, shattering the record of 61 put up by Roger Maris in 1961. His .333 BA leads the AL as does his 90 RBI. All of this hitting has helped his team stay in the thick of the AL pennant race. The Senators are now only 3.5 games out of 1st place.

WEB GEMS- Bot 4th: Richie Scheinblum robbed Frank Howard of an extra base hit.

Left fielder Frank Howard knocked 2 homeruns and had 4 RBI and Joe Coleman

completed the game without help from the bullpen as the Washington Senators

smashed the overmatched Cleveland Indians, 13 to 3.

Howard helped send the fans home happy. He slapped a single resulting in a

run in the 1st inning, lifted one out of the park for a two run home run in

the 2nd inning and clubbed a solo home run in the 8th inning. Washington

rapped out 15 hits for the night.

The victory was credited to Coleman(7-5) who went the distance, allowing 3

runs. Steve Hargan(4-7) absorbed the loss. He gave up 6 hits and 2 walks in

1 and 1/3 innings.

'I just got in the box, looked for a pitch and swung,' Howard said. 'That's

it'
