1969 AL Standings at the All Star break

July 21, 1969

The Baltimore Orioles and Minnesota Twins lead their respective divisions as baseball breaks for the All Star game being held in the nation's capital this year. Baltimore is back on top of the AL East after a brief time in 2nd place behind the Detroit Tigers earlier in the month. The Tigers have fallen 5.5 games behind the Orioles. They seem to really be missing their 2nd baseman Dick McAuliffe, who had surgery on his knee and is expected to be out the rest of the season. Since McAuliffe went down the Tigers have gone 2-6. The Washington Senators continue to impress and find themselves tied for 2nd with Detroit. The Minnesota Twins still sit on top of the AL West and have increased their lead over 2nd place Oaklland to 7 games. Every other team in the West are far out of the pennant race.

July 14, 1969 Detroit Injury Report

Monday July 14, 1969

The Detroit Tigers arrived in the nations capital for the start of a big 4 game series against the Washington Senators minus their 2nd baseman Dick McAuliffe. It was learned late Sunday night that McAuliffe injured his knee sometime during that days doubleheader vs. the Cleveland Indians. It is feared that surgery may be necessary for the man considered by many to be the sparkplug of the team. Manager Mayo Smith said recently called up rookie infielder Ike Brown will take over at 2nd base for now until the full extent of McAuliffe's injury is determined.

The Tigers have fallen back to 2nd place, 3 games behind the Baltimore Orioles and only 2 games ahead of the much improved 3rd place Senators.

July 9, 1969 Cleveland at Washington

Frank Howard of the Washington Senators is showing no sign of slowing his assault on AL pitching. He hit 2 more homers today and drove in 4 runs, leading his team to an impressive 13-3 win over the Cleveland Indians. Howard has now hit 11 hr's this month and we're not even half-way through it! He has 38 on the year which puts him on a pace to hit 69, shattering the record of 61 put up by Roger Maris in 1961. His .333 BA leads the AL as does his 90 RBI. All of this hitting has helped his team stay in the thick of the AL pennant race. The Senators are now only 3.5 games out of 1st place.

July 4, 1969 Baltimore at Detroit

The 1st place Baltimore Orioles are in town for a 3 game series against the 2nd place Detroit Tigers. In a rare Friday afternoon game at Tiger Stadium to celebrate the 4th of July, Mickey Lolich and the Tiger bullpen shut down the Orioles bats, paving the way to a 4-1 victory for the home town team.
Mickey didn't have his best control, he walked 8, but Baltimore wasn't able to capitalize on all its base runners and the Tigers pen shut them down after Lolich left the game. Al Kaline hit a 2-run homer in the 1st inning for Detroit and that proved to be all the Tigers would need today. With the win, Detroit pulls within 1 game of Baltimore for the top spot in the AL East.
