June 19, 1969 Detroit at New York



The Detroit Tigers were hitting on all cylinders and outfielder Jim Northrup put on a power display as the Tigers cruised to a 13-2 victory over the New York Yankees. With the win, Detroit takes the 5 game game series 3 games to 2. The Tigers banged out 19 hits on the night and Northrup went 5 for 5 while slamming 3 homeruns, knocking in 4 and scoring 5 times. Detroit is now 3.5 games behind division leading Baltimore and head home to start a 4 game series against the hard charging Washington Senators. Washington is playing very good baseball under 1st year manager Ted Williams and is only a .5 game behind the Tigers. <

Center fielder Jim Northrup cracked 3 homeruns and had 4 RBI as the Detroit


Tigers smashed the overmatched New York Yankees, 13 to 2.





Northrup enjoyed a big evening at the plate. He cracked a solo homerun in the


2nd inning, doubled in the 4th inning, ripped a solo home run in the 6th


inning, cracked a two-run shot in the 7th inning and ripped a single in the


9th inning. The Detroit offense poured it on, scoring in 7 of the 9 innings.





Mike Kilkenny(4-1) was the winner allowing no runs in 3 and 1/3 innings. Stan


Bahnsen(6-7) was charged with the loss. He served up 3 gopher balls in 5 and


2/3 innings.





The Detroit ballclub's record now stands at 35-24. With the loss, New York


has a record of 4-6 lately, 29-38 overall.
